Small light for those who like the construction environment...

I wanted to build a light but I didn't have any structure to do it so I had the idea to build a light crane.

 Needed materials  :

  • 2 sides of 6,5 * 30 * 1,8cm
  • 1 piece of 5 * 30 * 1,8cm (for the arm crane)
  • 1 piece of  6,5 * 5 * 1,8cm (for the foot)
  • 1 base
  • 1 board of  15 * 15 * 1,8cm for the lampshade
  • 2 slats of 6,5 * 1,8 * 1,8cm
  • 2 slats of 9 * 1,8 * 1,8cm
  • 5 slates of 7,5 * 1,8 * 1,8cm
  • 1 power cord with a switch and a socket
  • 1 bulb
  • Some rope
  • Metal stlats of 7,5cm
  • Threaded rods of 3mm diameter
  • Screws, dowels and wood glue

Needed tools :

  • Jigsaw
  • Scroll saw
  • Biscuit jointer
  • Drill
  • Wood drill bit of 4mm and 6mm

Steps :

  • Cut pieces in order to assemble the crane.
  • Groove the crane arm to insert the power cord.
  • Drill the 2 sides with the 6mm bit at 5cm of the border and at the middle of the slat.
  • Drill the crane arm when you have taken the mark based on the two that were just drilled on the sides.
  • Drill down the central "foot" and drill the base. By assembling them afterwards this will be used to make turn the crane.
  • Glue the feet in order to consolidate the bottom of the crane. The top is assembled with a dowel from one side to the other.
  • Drill at 4cm of the arm front with a bit of 4mm to pass the power cord.
  • Trace a circle of 4,5cm diameter on the board of 15*15cm and then trace several circles with 1cm more each one.
  • On each circle drill with a 4mm bit at 30° and then use the scroll saw to cut the circles at 30°.
  • On 5 circles your have you only need to keep the first the third and the fifth one.
  • Drill 3 points at 30° on each circle in order to insert the threaded rods.
  • Strengthen the crane base with the 2 slats of 6,5cm and the 3 slates of 9cm by screwing the base.
  • Drill at 2cm of the border at the back of the crane arm with a 4mm bit to pass the rope which will hold the weight.
  • Pass the rope in the hole and tie a knot on the top.
  • Prepare the weight by drilling in the middle and fix the metal slats.
  • Put the weights on the rope and tie a knot at the bottom in order for the rope to support the weights.
  • Finally we finish the light by sanding, varnishing and some other decorations...
